Guide

Working in Italy as a non-EU citizen

Premium

Short answer

Which permits allow work, how work authorisation is tied to your permesso, and what to check before accepting a job.

Information, not legal advice. MovItaly is not a law firm. Check with the questura or consulate before you act.

Who is this for

Non-EU residents and newcomers looking for or doing work in Italy.

Overview

Your right to work depends on your permit type. Work permits (lavoro subordinato, autonomo), family, protection and long-term permits generally allow work; study permits allow limited hours (TO VERIFY); tourist stays do not. Check the reason (motivo) on your permesso card. If unsure, ask a patronato or the Questura before signing a contract.
