Short answer
How the permesso process works: kit postale, appointment, fingerprints, ricevuta, what to bring and how long it takes.
Information, not legal advice. MovItaly is not a law firm. Check with the questura or consulate before you act.
Who is this for
Non-EU citizens who enter Italy with a long-stay visa (type D) or who need to renew or convert a permesso. Within 8 working days of arrival you must ask for the permesso di soggiorno. EU citizens do not need one but may register at the Comune.
Requirements
- A valid passport and entry visa (if needed).
- The dichiarazione di presenza (stamped at the border or filed with the Questura if arriving from another Schengen state).
- The documents for your type of permit (work contract, enrolment, family documents, etc.).
