What changed
Legislative Decree 16 April 2026, n. 83 (Gazzetta Ufficiale n. 115 of 20 May 2026) updates the Immigration Consolidated Act (D.Lgs. 286/1998) to apply Directive (EU) 2024/1233. Reported effects:
- One application procedure for the right to stay and to work.
- The Questore should issue the single permit within 30 days of a complete application; several other deadlines in art. 5 (renewal filing, issue or renewal of permits) move from 60 to 90 days. In force since 4 June 2026.
- More information duties linked to the integration agreement.
Steps
- Keep copies of every document and receipt.
- Ask the Questura or your patronato which procedure applies to your permit type.
Costs & timing
See the 30 and 90 day targets above.
Common mistakes
Confusing "application filed" with "application complete": the deadline runs from completeness.
